May 12 continued

May 12th continued:
We have learned that Spain has about 20% unemployment.  Life is hard for the working person here.  By their standards, we are quite lucky.  Gas here is almost $7.00 per gallon.  Today, Malaga was host to at least five or six large cruise ships.  This is so important for their economy and the shops and cafes were ready for the onslaught of tourists as they emerged from their ships.  The horse and buggy’s were all lined up, local tour guides and taxis at the ready, music in the squares, etc.  It was nice to see.  We, didn’t add too much to the economy since Lenny wasn’t feeling well and we have been here several times.  Our mission to get to a pharmacy, get some euros at the ATM and find a free WIFI spot was accomplished and now we are back on board.  We are still sticking to our goal of avoiding the elevators and only taking the steps.  Our daily goal is 10,000 steps or at least five miles.  We have done this easily each day, even on days when we did not leave the ship.  It is now 3:10 p.m. on board and we have already walked almost 5000 steps.  We will definitely meet our goal by tonight.  We can’t imagine what our bodies would look like without sticking to this schedule.
Tonight is the last of three formal nights.  The food aboard has been very good.  With the exception of last night’s show (a comedian who needs to find another profession), the entertainment has been excellent and the quality of the lecturers has also been quite good.  We have followed Nigel West, an expert on terrorism and counter terrorism.  He has been speaking on topics of espionage and he has been extremely interesting.  There is also a very broad range of musicians and musical ensembles; a great achipelo (sp????) group, wonderful pianist, violinist and several singers.  The ship’s theater troupe has also put on several good shows.  We are certainly not at a loss of things to do onboard.
